Volume 65: Issue 3 Brevard College For hearts and minds as large as the mountains Friday, December 13,1996 Women’s soccer takes national title Written by: Scott Wolfe Sports Editor Researched by: Claudia Argiro Sports Writer The Lady Tornados achieved the goal that they made as a team at the beginning of their season. As a unit, this team advanced to the NJCAA Women’s Soccer National Tournament. Not only did they go to Baltimore to be the most dominant team in the field ...THEY DID! The team carried a #1 ranking and an undefeated record into their second National Championship in the last three years. They were primed to put their undefeated 19-0 record on the line, and destroy a field that included defending Champs, Monroe Community College. The Lady Tornados immediately went to work by handling their first round opponent, Genesee Community College, 3-0. This sent them to a semi-finals match up against Ocean County Community College. The ladies responded by living up to their reputation and breezing into the championship game with a 2-0 victory. After a day off, the team was set to face Mora'oe. The defending champs were not ready to let the title go so easily and were on a mission to win back to back titles. The Lady Tornados immediately asserted their dominance by scoring two quick goals and putting the game in hand. Monroe was able to manage a late goal, but it was to little too late, as the SEASONS greetings from the members of the Clarion Staff The women’s soccer team celebrates their recent victory in this humorous photo. They were undefeated this season before going to Nationals. (Special to the Clarion.) whistle sounded and the team won their first national championship. Besides being honored as National Champions, they left with many records and accolades as well. The team set a record for single season victories with a perfect 22-0 mark. They also set a record for most shutouts in a season by winning 18 games without allowing heir opponent to score. Individual honors were also handed out as Maria Lara walked away with the Most Valuable Forward Award, and Bridget D’Arata was named Most Valuable Defensive Back. Both were named to the All- Tournament team along with Elin Braic. The team displayed its all-around work- ethic by having 7 different players score goals in the tournament. This just shows that this team has no standout players; they all work as a team. Also honored was Head Coach Joe Bartlinski. He was rewarded for his National Title by being named NJCAA Coach of the Year. The team returned to Brevard later in the day after winning their championship and were met by students who stayed up until 1:00 a.m. to congratulate Brevard’s newest National Champs. When asked how it felt to win. Sophomore Lisa Trapp replied," It really hasn’t sunk in yet that we won Nationals, but I’m very glad that I had the chance to be a part of the best team in NJCAA history”. Congratulations to the Lady Tornado’s Soccer team and all its coaches for the National Championship. You’ve have made us very proud!! The team will continue to prepare for a title defense next year by playing in indoor tournaments in the off-season. Also in this issue: Remembering...
